This piece exemplifies the traditional craftsmanship of the Jews of the Levant—a style derived from Mamluk art (dating back to the Mamluk rule of Egypt and Syria between 1250 and 1517). This artistic tradition largely vanished due to the successive waves of Jewish emigration to the United States and the Holy Land toward the end of the 20th century.
