DESCRIPTION: Ankle sprains are common orthopedic injuries and can lead to long-term impairments, including pain, stiffness, and gait abnormalities in as many as 72 percent of individuals. Furthermore, nearly 80 percent of those who suffer a sprain are likely to experience reinjury. Ankle sprains can be divided into two types—inversion (foot rolls in) and eversion (foot rolls out)—with inversion sprains accounting for more than three-quarters of cases. An inversion sprain damages ligaments on the outside of the ankle. You can tear one or all of the four ligaments located there. Imagine landing from a rebound in basketball and rolling your ankle; your foot’s pointed and turns inward (plantarflexion plus inversion). It usually turns inward because the ligament on the inside is so strong that it’s harder to turn out—that’s why eversion sprains are less common.
